Frankie & Bridie - The Artist Statement
Frankie didn't ask to exist. Bridie didn't ask to be created for him. And when she was — she took one look at the situation and decided she had better things to do.
This is not a love story. It's a leaving one.
She's ready to go. She's just not free yet.
Both figures are hand-cut from wood into their own silhouettes — each one a separate piece, displayed together as a single complete work. Frankie stands in his blue suit, a single hand-painted tear on his cheek, holding the note she wrote him. Frankie, I'm so sorry. He is bereft. He is the sum of many men, assembled and reanimated, and he cannot understand why that isn't enough. Bridie is already turning away — profile to the viewer, chin lifted, body moving toward whatever comes next. She doesn't have a name of her own. She never did. And she is choosing, with full knowledge of the consequences, to leave anyway.
Both figures are set against a broken heart — glittering red, hand-painted, the diptych format structural and intentional. Together and apart simultaneously. The Ben-Day dot texture is hand-applied across every surface. The metallic foil catches the light differently on each panel. Multiple layers of high-gloss archival varnish finish each piece to gallery standard. Days of work. Two results. One story.
Her strength is made of resistance, perseverance, and the particular kind of courage it takes to stand in a patriarchal shadow and refuse to disappear into it.
She doesn't even have her own name. She never did. That's rather the point.
